DC Private Time Frames


Step 1: Notice
  • Notice is not a prerequisite to Lien in Washington D.C. NACM suggests serving a “Subcontractor’s Demand for Information” 30 days prior to lien. See Speed Bumps.

Step 2: Lien
  • subcontractor or supplier who does not have a direct contractual relationship with the prime contractor does not have lien rights in DC.
  • Prime Contractors: File Notice of Mechanic’s Lien within 90 days after the earlier of the completion or termination of the project.
  • Suppliers and Subcontractors contracting with a Prime Contractor: Serve the Owner and file Notice of Mechanic’s Lien during construction but no later than within 90 days of completion or termination of the project.

Step 3: Foreclosure
  • Within 180 days after filing of the notice lien.
